For years, my afternoon go-to tea has been an Assam & for the last few, one in particular: Halmari Estate Assam CTC BOP.  I don’t know if there is any science behind it, but I always feel like I get the best energy boost from a strong cup of Assam. Needless to say, I was really excited when I got this free sample from Upton.

SPHEBP_map_02212019Halmari is an award-winning Tea Estate that has been around for over 100 years. Situated in the plains of Upper Assam, I drink over a pound of their tea every year.

Being from one of my favorite estates, I had high hopes for this sample. However, it just tasted strange to me. I tried for days to figure out the best way to describe the flavor note I was getting, but in the end, settled on the most direct: strange. This tea had a weird artificial note to it.

Being from Upton, who also carries many artificially flavored teas, I’m wondering if this sample was contaminated. The dry aroma is delicious but didn’t transfer into the cup for me. Having been a customer of Upton for many years, I would like to note that this is the first Assam I’ve ever received that I didn’t like. I was actually really surprised and the reason I think it may have something else mixed in. If you’re looking for high-quality tea in the US and want quick shipping, Upton’s service is exceptional.
