Results: While having a beautiful appearance, the flavor was not there. Worth trying for the novelty. Might work for those preferring extremely light green tea.

I’ve been sitting on this sample for a couple of weeks now. I only recently discovered Hou Kui and was impressed by its unique beauty and processing. Unlike other teas that are rolled, this green tea has been pressed into delicate flakes. A rather new tea first developed in the 20th century, it is grown at the foot of Huangshan mountain range in the former Taiping Prefecture, Anhui. When I first saw it, I was reminded of seaweed and think its one of the most colorful and beautiful teas I’ve ever seen. When laid out on a white background it could easily be mistaken for asparagus.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the lack of dry aroma and flavor. The wet leaf and liquor have a vibrant sweet-pea aroma with hints of lima bean, but it did not carry over to the taste. Considering the amount of leaf I used 9.6 grams, I was hoping for quite the punch, but in the end, this tea was just too delicate for my tastes.
Due to its unusual processing and beautiful appearance, its something you might want to try. If you like very delicate teas this could be a winner for you, but I found it lacking in depth or complexity for my palate.
